Overview & How to Play

Get the most toppings for your… Avocado Toast!

We each all have a deck of cards, and take turns flipping over one card at a time, whenever there’s a pair, you gotta slap! Ya win the slap, meaning you’re the fastest, you get a topping.

Here’s a big distinction here- you have to actually talk: where you count off Avocados, so its ‘1 Avocado’ for the first card, then next card ‘2 Avocado’, ‘3' Avocado’, and once you get to ‘10 Avocado’, you reset back to ‘1 Avocado’. If at any time your Avocado number you’re saying aloud matches the number on that card flipped, that’s a slap! Whenever you win a slap, you just get that specific Topping shown, that’s points.

Pros

You know that feeling when you open a perfect avocado? That’s opening this box, look at that color! The cards are all super easy to see, which is a MUST for these real-time games.

Avocado Smash! feels generally way more family friendly, than say, Egyptian War, or Rat-Screw, because there is ZERO elimination in this system. So, it’s way less punishing for your lower reaction time buddies.

Even slapping veterans can get thrown off by the constant talking too. You’re constantly chuckling at people stumbling over Avocado numbers, and there’s sheer madness of hearing “1 Avocado 2 Avocado 3 Avocado 4 Avocado 5 Avocado…” You have to pay attention to the visual cues as well as verbal cues of ‘Avocado’ being spewed out of people’s mouths. This also really helps ease people up.

Then there’s that other fun twist of the “You’re Toast” card, where you’re now doing speed talking, instead of speed slapping, which is a great idea to freshen the pace up as the “6 Avocado 7 Avocado 8 Avocado” gets stopped by “YOU’RE TOAST!” Whoever says this last, gets punished.

Cons & Nitpicks

The "'YOU’RE TOAST” actually gets us to some issues. This card that asks for yelling is a good idea, but then its actually really hard to tell who is saying it last when everyone is screaming. There are a lot of cases you just aren’t sure who loses this timed event.

The main game just has too many empty results for a ‘slapping game’: TWO of the seven suits not giving payouts when slapped is too many meaningless slaps.

Then, you really want to be playing this with at least 4 or more people, or else you run into the game taking too long, where remember, there’s no elimination to quickly weed people out like in Egyptian War.

And also, where are the rules to punish players for fake slaps, or card fumbling? We have to evaluate this through a critical lens, yet most fans of this weight of game will houserule this to their liking.

Final Thoughts

Maybe traditional slapping games are fun to you, and you want something with a little more spice and theme, or maybe something that fits more people! Then, with Avocado Smash!, you still have all the fast slaps, where you have to concentrate as much as on the card flips as the word game, and the mood just feels lighter.

It’s a slapping card game, made friendlier, for more people. It isn’t trying to be anything crazier.
