Overview & How to Play

What the heck is a Dodgeball card game?

Well to put it simply, you’re playing spoons, but whenever players make a set of Burrito cards, people are gonna start throwing plushy burritos at each other.

At its core, Throw Throw Burrito is a dexterity game, where players are drawing and matching cards as fast as possible to complete matching sets of cards in order to score the most points in 2 rounds. Every set is worth a point, doesn’t matter what’s on the card… except for when they say Burrito on them! Burrito sets pause the game and cause players to scramble for foam burritos to throw at each other. Once anyone gets hit with a foam burrito, that scramble ends, and that person takes a Burrito Bruise, meaning they lose a point.

Rounds end once all 6 burrito bruises have been given out, and there’s two rounds to play. Just tally up all of your points at that round end, where sets of cards are 1 point, and sets of burrito cards are 2 points. Every bruise subtracts a point. After both rounds, the winner of the second round, must have a burrito duel with the winner of the first round (who will have a FEAR ME token).

Clarification: Dodgeball rules apply during foam burrito throwing, like being able to catch burritos and deflecting them with your own burrito.

Pros

Throw Throw Burrito is ridiculouuuuus, and if you’re familiar with the ‘Oatmeal’ at all, you’ll recognize their trademark art style and bizarre sense of humor. Meow Cow, Barky Sharky, GOTH SLOTH. Plus, the rulebook is fantastic.

But burritos. They’re the heart and soul of the entire game, and are incredibly soft and squishy. We really doubt you could hurt someone with them aside from asphyxiation. Hitting TVs fixed in place won’t be an issue at all.

There’s also a lot of clever design decisions for gameplay. Matching 3 cards from a hand of 5 means that matches will be happening frequently, so you’re definitely rewarded for being very quick with your movements and decision making— yes, we said decisionmaking. There are very brief decisions where you have to look at your hand and immediately decide what set you’re trying to complete… all in real time!

On top of that, if you have galaxy brain, you can look around and look at all the completed sets to make a quick guess as to the likelihood of you drawing certain cards. Or you can just say, screw it I’m gonna go for the Jelly Jelly cause it’s cute, you can also just turn off your brain if you want—whatever floats your boat.

We also appreciate how there’s no player elimination or anything cause in normal Spoons, players get offed one by one, but in Throw Throw Burrito everything’s all about points and everyone stays in. Giving out burrito wounds instead of elimination is a much appreciated decision. This also makes Throw Throw Burrito adhere to playtime and all sorts of player counts really well.

The designers also pretty much covered every single permutation of Burrito Battle you can think of. There’s only so many ways to make everyone fight over two burritos and the 3 types of Burrito Battles cover all of them. Going for these is incentivized anyways, because they’re each worth 2 points, and always result in someone else at the table losing a point- so more burrito throwing!

Nitpicks

There’s actually nothing bad we could come up with this game.

Okay, like sure, there’s very nitpicky things like needing an appropriate place to play, the cards getting damaged from the real-time grabbing nature, and possible noise complaints, but those are all things that are inherent with the design of the game. Plus, there’s an included small room rules variant!

Final Thoughts

If you happen to be a fan of Spoons, Dodgeball, or both, you HAVE to pick up this game. Throw Throw Burrito found a way to take the breakneck drawing speed of spoons and combine it with Dodgeball to create something even more addicting since now there’s no elimination, and there’s so much more movement aside from the initial grabbing from the middle. This is a party game that’s really easy to keep playing until everyone’s actually just tired from the game.

If Throw Throw Burrito looks fun to you and you have a good place to play it, 100% go buy it, you will absolutely have a blast.
