Splendor Duel Review
2 Player Splendor gets intense.
The beloved gem-pickup game gets a 2 player only version, with way more crunch! It still has discounted card buys and reserving, but with a bunch of new mechanics to be a Splendor cousin rather than successor. Still 30 minutes, this review written as though you know normal Splendor.

Story
Splendor was the first hobby “Euro” we purchased (unless you count Catan as one), and we’ve played that gem pickup game countless times throughout the years, and it was one of our first reviews! We’ve even commentated for it at WSBG.
We played Splendor Duel 3 times, twice on TTS, once IRL. We are reviewing this from the lens of you knowing Splendor already!
Need to learn how to play? Or want more reasoning for our points? Our review video’s got you!
Component Pros — Everything is Amazing
Amazing insert
Privileged scrolls are minis
Gem pieces are like original great ones, just smaller
Gems go inside nice feeling bag
Visual Pros
New Royals have cartoon-y look which doesn’t feel out of place
Splendid jewelry on buyable cards
Nothing confusing with icons/symbols while playing
Oh and the rulebook is good, with a reference on the back!
Gameplay Pros — Umbrella of more crunchiness
Spatial element to picking up gems
Always look for combinations of colors you want
Pick them up to deny opponent?
Pick up 2 instead of 3 still worth it?
Can be big brain and play around the refill, since refills from center then outwards.
Built in penalties of wanting to go hard: like picking up 3 of the same gem, or picking up 2 pearls (new gem)
Penalty: gives opponent free privilege
Addition of pearl
No card that outputs it, and cost for about half the cards (stronger ones)
Have to make time to grab it from board, or deliberately reserve to get gold to act as pearl
Or just focus on the other cards that don’t need it
Cards have actual abilities now
e.g. take another turn
e.g. get a free gem
e.g. get privilege
e.g. copy another color of card you have
Adds decision making after the buy
Some cards with 2 buying power to play around (not exactly an ability)
No more “objectively better than others” cards in normal Splendor
Good balance shines better in 2P
Turn structure is more complicated
Before action, can spend privilege for free gem or refresh middle
Rewards you for keeping track of what’s been spent
Game structure has 3 win conditions to pivot between
Usually going between first 2 (points and crowns)
Last win condition is a alternate threat
Side benefit of solving issue with serious Splendor gameplay, where getting cards with VP was good and you ignore noble
Interaction Pros
Gotta look at central board of gems
Abilities to take gems from an opponent (can take pearl)
With 3 win conditions, and more nuanced buys just way more counterplay
Progression Pros — More dynamic pacing
Early game more interesting with more cards at bottom of pyramids (5 vs. previous 4)
Royals have abilities, need to know when to get them
Feeling of “cycles” as refresh central board
Surges of grabbing 3 in a row when refreshes
then grabbing slows down as only 2 gems in a row
When only 1 ofs, maybe only use privilege or card abilities to get
Mid/high row cards have abilities, making end game swingy
e.g. copy color you already have, then take another turn!
Replayability Pros
Bottom row of 5 with abilities make initial moves different
Central board filing is slightly different
Royal all the same but have each own merit of rushing
Runs true to time
Probably after 1st or 2nd game will get to be around 30 min
Recommender Score - 10/10 MASTERPIECE!
For only $30 MSRP for these components, this portable box is DEFINITELY worth picking up… if you’re looking for a Splendor cousin that is more complex. It’s not really even a gateway game anymore like Splendor is, it’s now a game to play AFTER you know your gateways.
Splendor Duel, while fixing some small problems with Splendor, is a noticeable tick up in complexity: there’s different phases of turns, a spatial element for gem harvesting, and 3x as many win conditions! This is less streamlined, I mean at the minimum you have to at least think about 2 boards of moving things with actual symbols! We could easily see how some fans of the base game get overwhelmed- this clearly is for the more serious groups.
